2011-12 LMSSDL Season
With forty-eight debates this year, we believe that we have been able to offer a robust, vibrant, and engaging learning experience for more than forty area middle-school students. Ten schools were involved in some league activities this year, seven competed in
our qualifying tournaments, five qualified to our championship tournament but,
in the end, one emerged as simply the best. Bravo to the back-to-back champion

Why Debate 2012
For a powerful summary of the benefits of interscholastic debating, you may be interested in the recent remarks by Secretary Arne Duncan of the U.S. Department of Education. He concludes: "In a number of respects, competitive urban debate is almost uniquely suited to building what's been called the "Four C's" of 21st century skills—critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. And to that list I might add a fifth "C"—for civic awareness and engagement" (The Power of Debate, April 12, 2012). Read the full address here.

I'd like to thank everyone who has been involved in this experiment over the
last three years. I have special appreciation for our volunteers who, with
nothing to gain, gave of themselves to make the miracle of academc debating
available to Louisville-area students. To our student debates, I'd like to say
congratulation and wish you all the best of luck. Jeff
